Top 9 Ways to Keep Your
New Year's Golf Resolutions

You know you did it...you made a commitment to either play more golf or improve your golf game this year. There are tons of ways to make golf more fun, so little and some big.

Here are a few suggestions to help you meet your resolution:

1)
Save on greens fees. Buy a Red Dot Savings Guide and it practically pays for itself in one use. Two-for-one and discounts all over So. Cal. and at CGC.
2)
Practice more. You can save up to 25% on range balls with a range card and save an additional 30% during happy hours. More info...
3)
Change your grips. Worn grips can cause blisters and negatively affect your swing and ball flight. Click here for a re-gripping coupon worth up to $14 or get info about our club repair services.
4)
Take a lesson. We have an incredible staff of PGA & LPGA teaching professionals at your disposal. One lesson could help you solve many issues.
5)
Change your spikes. Slipping and spinning out can cause all kinds of problems. Bring your shoes in and we'll change your spikes for you with purchase of new spikes.
6)
Clubfitting or retro-fitting. If you're playing with clubs that aren't fit to your individual swing, you're making the game harder than it has to be. We fit 13 major brands on the range and use a FlightScope launch monitor. Click here for Q&A info about clubfitting.
7)
Use a training aid. See below for info about our new rental program.
8)
Learn the rules. Sometimes rules can work in your favor - but only if you know them. Rules books and other books to help you understand them available.
9)
Make golf FUN. Express yourself with a character headcover for your bag. Are you a Chargers Fan, a Cookie Monster or a Pink Panther? We have the largest selection anywhere.

    Examine Your Wedge Lofts
A Quick Tip from Instructor Jake Wiese

Do you have a big gap between the distances that you hit individual wedges? Do you not have one that you can hit a particular distance?

Over the last few years, with improvements in technology and in my students' games, I've noticed that they've increased the distance they hit it, but they aren't sure why.

In the past 10 years the standard lofts on iron sets have decreased resulting in improved distance. A pitching wedge used to have 50 degrees of loft. Now it can be as strong as 44 degrees. How does this translate? It means that if you purchased new clubs recently and haven't adjusted any of your wedges, you may have 10-12 degrees of difference in loft. This can create a differential gap of 20-35 yards, way more than is desirable.

Hybrids can cause the same problem if you didn't work with a clubfitter to make sure you didn't create gaps in your distance ranges. Even though your old 3-iron and new 21 degree hybrid might have the same loft, you may hit them entirely different distances.

Rather than fighting the inconsistency of distance gaps by "backing-off" or "muscling up" on clubs that don't have the lofts you need, you'll find it easier to score when you can make full swings.

My recommendation? Get your lofts and distances checked by a CGC clubfitting professional. You may discover that your wedge lofts need adjusting or that you could benefit from an additional wedge such as a gap wedge.

Jake Wiese is a PGA Professional, a CGC clubfitting professional and the Director of Instruction for the North County Junior Golf Association. He instructs private lessons and beginner and junior classes. Click here for more info about Jake or call the pro shop at 760-720-GOLF to schedule a lesson.
