QUICK LESSON TIP:
Losing Distance?
Check Your Posture
The great Ben Hogan once said: "If you don't have a good grip and set-up, you will never have a good swing."
This week let's focus on a very important part of your set-up that might be causing you to lose distance: Posture. Your grandmother may have always told you "stand up straight" - and she wasn't far off. Your spine angle makes a difference when you try to make a good turn in your backswing.
Many players have a tendency to get "hunched over" when addressing the ball, which makes it very difficult to turn properly. So, they compensate for this inability to turn by swinging with their arms. This results in a major distance loss.
Take advantage of the mirrors at CGC to check your posture and set-up BEFORE you hit any practice balls. There is a mirror on the backside of each ball machine building.
Some checkpoints that should help you feel "taller" when in good athletic position posture:
1. Stand up straight, shoulders back
2. Feel yourself tilting from your hips (not hunching your shoulders)
3. Knees slightly flexed, arms hang down naturally from this position
4. Keep spine angle consistent throughout swing
Of course, everyone will stand as it is comfortable for them or as their body flexibility restrictions allow. If you have questions about your set-up, it's always a good idea to consult with an instructor to make sure you're on the right track and not changing your posture in a way that might result in injury.
