When you finish a golf round and finalize the scorecard, what is your score really telling you?
Does it tell you how well you hit your driver? How many balls you hit out of bounds or in a hazard? Or, is it just that final number that you look at to judge how you played?
Take the time to analyze your game and pinpoint the areas screaming out for improvement.
You'll notice on the scorecard a few rows of boxes across the bottom which provide a great place to record an analysis of your game. Even if you're not responsible as scorekeeper for your group, have a scorecard handy to utilize those rows.
These topics can easily be documented by
marking a tally for "yes" or you can fill in the actual number for the topic you are analyzing. As time goes on, you will see a trend and consistency in areas of concern and/or improvement - the blank boxes!
Up and Downs: When you are within 75 yards of the green: did you take one shot(UP) and have the following putt goes in (DOWN)?
Fairways Hit: Every time you tee off, the result should either be on the fairway (Par 4's and 5's), or on the green (Par 3's).
Greens Hit: When a player is able to place their ball on the green in one stoke on a Par 3, in two strokes on a Par 4, and three Stokes on a Par 5.
Sand Saves: Hit the ball out of the greenside bunker and the follow-up stroke goes in the hole.
Number of Putts: Total number of putts for the round: If your putts exceed 36 for 18 holes, you may want to look at the areas above to help minimize length of first putts to help eliminate three putts.
Distance (in yards) for second shot on every hole: This one can be the most rewarding in terms of knowing what club(s) to practice. You can also mark on the scorecard the actual club you hit, so you know, for example, that your 7-iron is a club you use a lot.
If any of these areas stick out as an area of possible improvement, take some time to go to the range and zone in on improving it. Go with a specific goal in mind and stick to that goal!
Be sure to use at least a portion of the balls in every range bucket to practice your short game, as that is one big key to lowering your scores.
