My favorite drill over the years is one that has a greatly improved my tempo, distance control, accuracy and, most importantly, my ability to trust my golf swing while achieving maximum distance.
It's an easy drill to practice on the range and will translate into great results for you on the course.
The "Ladder" drill starts by choosing a mid/short iron. I like to use my 7 iron. Start by taking a relatively short swing and having the golf ball travel only 10 yards. If it goes shorter or farther, keep hitting until you hit your 10 yard mark.
Once you have achieved this, move on to 15 yards, then 25, 35, 45 and so on.
By the time you get to your 45-yard "swing" (with a 7 iron), you should be able to take a full, accelerating swing at the ball. Go "all the way up the ladder" until you hit your "desired" distance with that club.
You will realize that the "feeling" of your 75-yard shot translates to the full distance of a 150-yard shot - resulting in a much slower, relaxed swing and a more consistent ball striking result for the maximum distance with that club.
