A Quick Tip from Dori O'Rouke

How to Line Up Your Putts More Effectively

Did you know that most golfers choose a line to putt on and then proceed to set-up on a completely different line? That means there's a very good chance you're lining up on a different line than you intend, as well.

This is usually due to the difference in your vision from when you're looking at the target from BEHIND the ball versus looking at the target from the SIDE of the ball (in relation to the target line). When looking at your target from BEHIND the ball, your eyes are level and your face is directly at the target, so both eyes are an equal distance from it.

However, when looking at the target from the SIDE of the ball, as in a normal putting address position, most golfers naturally look down the target line by tilting their head and turning it slightly. Test this for yourself. Bottom line, if you're lining up your shots from your address position, like so many golfers do, your right eye will be lower than your left and farther from the target (for right-handed players).

For most golfers, this eye position makes the target appear to be to the right of its actual location. Hence, most right-handed golfers who line up their putts from their address position are lined up to the right of the line they intend. So, when practicing putting, check your line for yourself or ask a buddy to help. If you’re not lined up where you want to be, make sure you're not trying to line up from your address position, where your vision is skewed.

Be sure to line up every putt from BEHIND the ball where you can take advantage of your "true vision." Using a ball-marking tool to put a straight line on your ball and then putting that line on your target line while BEHIND the ball is also helpful for helping you set-up on your target line. These tools are inexpensive and worth it when it helps you sink more putts!
