The club must accelerate on the downswing and through the hitting area in order to hit the ball first and crisply, as opposed to fat or thin. This can often be achieved by shortening the backswing or allowing your transition to become more deliberate as the club starts down towards the ball.
The other key to becoming crafty and successful around the greens is to have very little tension in your hands and arms. This will allow the player increased feel and an easily repeatable action producing better, more consistent chip shots.
